A skin rash can occur for a number of reasons and usually it is nothing to be concerned about. However a skin rash can be highly unpleasant and uncomfortable and you are always best seeking medical treatment if it doesn’t clear up in a couple of days.
Skin rashes are a sign that something has irritated the skin, this condition is also known as contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis will cause a redness of the skin and small bumps forming on the affected area. If you have a more severe reaction to an irritant you may suffer blisters and swelling. Common causes of contact dermatitis include the following irritants:
- Cosmetics such as shampoo, soap, perfumes and detergents.
- Poisonous flora and fauna such as poison ivy, sumac and oak.
- Latex allergies.
- Fabrics and jewelry.
- Interaction with insects such as when camping or hiking.
A severe allergic skin reaction to something can produce a skin rash called hives. Hives appear like large red blotches on the skin and can be a very itchy skin rash and extremely uncomfortable. To reduce the reaction you should take over the counter antihistamines or book an appointment with your doctor to prevent the condition worsening.
Heat Rash in Infants
The next most common form of skin rash is heat rash. A heat rash i common in babies who hve not yet developed a cooling system. A heat rash will generally look a little red with tiny pimples on the surface of the skin. The skin around the affected area may feel clammy, damp and warm. This type of skin rash usually occurs on the neck, the chest, and the stomach.
The most effective way to treat heat rash in babies is simply to remove blanket or layer of clothing and let the infant cool down. Applying a mild, gentle talcum powder may help to soothe the itching. If you wish to use calamine lotion to soothe your child’s skin then be sure to seek approval from your local family doctor first.
